CASSA Projects: Communities in Action and Community Builders

Call out for Volunteers

CASSA is seeking volunteers to help organize and execute the following projects:

Project: Communities in Action

CASSA has partnered with TCHC to work with youth and women from the underserved Bangladeshi and Tamil communities living in TCHC buildings. The project aims to:

create awareness and address poverty related issues

increase community engagement of youth and women

              provide space to share experiences

identify potential solutions for an issue they are currently facing

ensure the voices of South Asian communities are heard at all institutional and governmental levels.

The outcome of the project would be the development of a community resource guide as well as empowered youth and women engaged in community development work

Project: Community Builders

The project entails an initiation that intends to recognize diversity and celebrates its’ contribution in the social and cultural fabric of Ontario. It would involve recruiting South Asian youth and senior, from Markham and Scarborough, as “Diversity Ambassadors” to conduct two community dialogues discussing cultural diversity and issues of racism across the GTA

By the end of the project we will publish a booklet to:

celebrate contributions of diverse South Asian communities

              highlight discussion outcomes

              share diverse community member’s stories

educate the public by presenting information on initiatives and resources on racism

If you are interested in volunteering or have any inquiries about the projects please contact Keerthy: keerthy@cassa.on.ca

Toronto-Criminalization Study Recruitment Help

The criminalization study currently underway is seeking individuals for supplemental recruitment and interviewing purposes. We are specifically trying to identify individuals that have had “difficulty” with the law, including:

· People who have experienced a threat of legal consequences from a partner, family member, employer, etc in relation to their HIV status (e.g. non-disclosure)

· People who have been served with a public health order (e.g. Section 22)

· People who have been processed by the criminal justice system related to their HIV status (e.g. police action, charge, prosecution, etc)

· People who have complained to criminal justice or public health authorities about having been exposed or infected by HIV

If you could help identify any of these individuals, and encourage them to phone or e-mail me, it would be most helpful. The interviews come with a $30 honourarium and take approximately one hour.

Canada's Shame, Conservative gov't votes against human rights‏

Send a letter to Stephen Harper

Canada's Shame
Conservative government votes against human rights

On January 12, 2008 the United Nations Human Rights Council voted to condemn the "massive violations of human rights" by Israel in Gaza. Thirty three countries voted in favour of the resolution and, shamefully, Canada was the ONLY country to vote against.

Simply cut and paste the letter into your e-mail and add your details at the end. Also, copy the e-mail addresses listed here:

Let the Canadian Peace Alliance know about your efforts. Please cc the Canadian Peace Alliance at cpa@web.ca

To: Prime Minister, Stephen Harper

The Canadian Peace Alliance, Canada's largest pan-Canadian peace network representing more than 150 organizations, condemns your shameful decision to be the only country to vote against the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution calling for an end to the "massive human rights violations" against the people of Gaza. Further, we demand that the Government of Canada publicly support that resolution and call on Israel to immediately cease the killing of Palestinians and withdraw from the Gaza strip.

After 17 days of fighting in Gaza more than 900 Palestinians, mainly civilians, have been killed by the Israelis and more than 3500 wounded. The Israeli actions have been condemned by international human rights organizations and the United Nations as violating international law and the Geneva conventions. The systemic destruction of civilian infrastructure and the collective punishment of the people of Gaza is nothing short of a war crime. The Government of Canada, by not supporting this UN resolution, is complicit in those war crimes.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza gets worse with each day of the aggressive Israeli attacks. The 1.5 million people of Gaza are threatened with a disaster as the necessities of life: water, food and medical supplies run dangerously low. More than 25,000 Gazan civilians have been internally displaced and there is no route for them to escape the carnage.

The people of Canada want their government to ensure the just application of international law yet this decision, once again, shows that the Conservative government supports the wholesale slaughter of innocent people. Thousands of Canadians and hundreds of thousands around the world have demonstrated to end the war in Gaza. We demand you stand with the growing international consensus and call for an end to the war on the people of Gaza a now.

Introducing The "Ryerson Students for Medicare" group

Is public medicare important to you?

Want to help speak out against the privatization of your health care?Hi!I am excited to be introducing the "Ryerson Students for Medicare" to your student organization. The Ontario Health Coalition (http://www.web.net/ohc/) is working with student campus reps, to increase awareness about the current political agenda regarding health care privatization and the impact this will have on public medicare. Medicare is Canada's national health insurance program, which ensures that all residents have access to hospitals and physician services. Privatization creates a health care system of two groups- those who can pay for services, and those who cannot. We can see the effects of privatization in the States… Let’s keep our Medicare!

I am hoping to make contact with someone in your group to establish information sharing opportunities, networking and discuss possible joint ventures. Also! I am hoping to find fellow collaborators for the Students for Medicare group, especially for the initial mapping out of who we are and what we want to do for the school year.

If you need some more information please contact me at d2rush@ryerson.ca.An additional email will be sent out soon containing information regarding our first events. I hope that this information can be placed in any newsletter/emails that are circulated around the Ryerson Community or your programs.
Thank you any info or support you are able to give!

Project Going Home

Project Going Home supports individuals, 16 and older, and families, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness within the City of Toronto, to reconnect with or establish support systems within their home community. Referrals to the program come from individuals and families, or from other services within the community such as shelters and hostels. The program offices are located at 95 Wellesley Street East.

Project Going Home uses a client focused, strengths based approach to develop an individualized plan for each client that best meets their needs. Project Going Home assists homeless individuals and families to return to their home community if it is clearly deemed to be in their best interest to do so. The program provides the following services:
  • Accommodation - the program seeks and/or verifies that the individual or family will have accommodations within their home community
  • Connections / Referrals - referrals are made to local supports and services that will continue to support the individual or family upon return to their community
  • Travel Support - eligible clients will receive minimal travel support in the form of toiletries, and bag lunches
  • Transportation - transportation is provided, as necessary, to facilitate clients return to their home community

Project Going Home works in collaboration with relevant community services and agencies to ensure that all provisions are in place for a smooth transition for the client back to their home community.

Clients who return to their home community receive follow-up support to assist in their successful reintegration. Program staff will make telephone contact with the client(s) at least 1 week, 1 month and 3 months following their return to their home community, in order to check in and ensure that their needs continue to be met.
